C H A R A C T E R I N F O
Character Name: Yumi Ozawa
Series: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Age/Gender: Female, 17
Canon Point: Post true-end, Persona 4 Golden (Lovers route not taken)
History: Here!
Personality:
When Yumi first appears in Persona 4: Golden, her name is shown as “brisk girl.” It’s fitting; in this first scene where the protagonist overhears her talking to another student on his way to school, she immediately implies that the other girl can’t handle being in two clubs without “half-assing” them. This sets the tone for her entire social link perfectly, because that’s just the kind of girl Yumi Ozawa is. She speaks what she wants to say without holding back, and she’s incredibly to the point even if it means being insulting. She has a lot of confidence, going so far as to say things like “If anyone thinks they can do a better job than me, please come on up” and “If only standing around flirting made you a better actor, huh?” Even outside of school, she retains the same amount of confidence. She knows exactly what she wants and she’s willing to get it and tell you exactly what you need to do for her.
Despite this amazing self-confidence, Yumi herself admits that it’s an act sometimes. Having had a troubled childhood, she throws herself headfirst into everything and works hard to distract herself from the realities of what’s around her. Acting, in particular, is important to her. As the star of the drama club, she openly admits to the protagonist that she doesn’t need lights or costumes, just a role to play...because any role is better than being her. Thinking through things is something that is difficult for her and something that worries her, so it’s easier for her to ignore what’s going on around her by throwing herself into something she enjoys and can work hard at. Her dedication when she does this is extreme—she reads scripts and adds notations to them, she reviews play performances and watches DVDs, and she practices expert acting techniques. She can even cry on command.
Her entire character arc is focused on her growing out of hiding from life and learning to live it. Yumi is a bit of a spiteful and unforgiving person by nature, but her father receives the worst of it. After he comes back into her life with a terminal illness, she’s unable to look past that and refuses to talk to him. She even starts to hate her mom for forgiving him, since he was the one who cheated on her and left them both. When times in her life get bad and she can’t distract herself, she starts to blame her fate. Why me? Why does this have to happen to me? She questions how fair everything is around her. In the end, she’s able to slowly forgive him and start to love him again, but he passes away before she can tell him everything that she wanted to say.
Her personality changes drastically after her father passes away. She’s able to look towards the future for the first time, and she even quits the drama club. Her current goals switch from hiding away in her work to working hard so she can find out exactly what meaning her life has. Once again, she throws herself into everything. She gets involved in local politics, and she finds a job at Junes almost immediately. In this light, some of Yumi’s kinder tendencies are revealed. While she’s focusing on “why me” and her hatred for her father, her harsh tongue and tendency to anger quickly are seen repeatedly. While she’s focusing on how to live her life, though, her kindness really shines. She’s concerned about how to help best support her mother and how to do everything she wants while also tending to her needs.
The radical shift in her history aside, Yumi is also revealed to be very friendly. While everyone can openly admit that she’s stubborn and has difficulty admitting her feelings (she admits it herself), it’s shown in new scenes of P4G that she has a very active social life. She’s somewhat close to Daisuke Nagase, and she remarks about how she’s used to dealing with his blunt and tactless comments while in the class. She admits to enjoying cute things like Teddie’s costume whenever she’s at Junes, and it shows she has a tendency to stop and talk with pretty much anyone she knows as she goes about her errands for her mother. She never loses the confidence she has (though she admits in one scene to forcing it sometimes...she is an actress, after all), her love of having fun and being around people really shine in the new scenes the remake shoes.
She has her own fair share of quirks, too. She’s very spiritual, believing in greeting the gods each New Year, and she has a fondness for drawing fortunes and participating in lotteries. She really enjoys the games of random chance. In her lovers route, she admits to wondering what the protagonist’s room is like, and she goes so far as to say that she sometimes pictures him doing normal things in his room...like changing his clothes, only to get embarrassed as soon as she says it. She doesn’t have a lot of experience with having guy friends, she also admits, and she doesn’t really know what men are looking for in a girlfriend sometimes. Awkward silences are one of her weaknesses as well; when no one’s talking, she feels the need to break the silence, even if it means saying things she doesn’t want to say. She’s so forward about getting what she wants that she tells the protagonist to buy her a candy apple as opposed to just asking, and she also insists on paying equally when they share a meal together. She also gets easily spooked by haunted houses and scary stories; as she makes her way through the culture festival’s haunted house, she acts like a ghost in hopes of not getting scared by the ghosts...and immediately freaks out when something touches her (she won’t admit it, though!).
All-in-all, Yumi is a normal high school girl who had trouble dealing with her dad’s abandonment. She’s looking forward to living her life. She says that her year was turbulent and that she misses her father, but she’s incredibly thankful for the stronger person it’s helping her become. She no longer questions “why me?” every night, but instead thinks about things that only she can do. Her tongue will always be harsh and she’ll always be as stubborn as they come, and sure, she’s going to always reminisce about her father because of how recently he passed...but her kindness, playfulness, and dedication to everything she touches will always shine through as well.
Special Abilities: Yumi is pretty good at everything she puts her mind to, especially acting, but she doesn't have any special abilities outside of that.
How did your character die? During a robbery at Junes, Yumi activated a silent alarm and was caught doing so. She was shot, but it happened so quickly she didn't have time to agonize over it.
Other: None.

School was the worst part of the day.
For Yumi, it just wasn’t anything like school back home. There was no point to the tests or the homework or the grades or the studying...which wasn’t the worst thing, consdiering. But there also wasn’t anything familiar, either. There was no drama club, no familiar faces, nothing to work for, and nothing to throw herself into to forget about everything that had happened since she arrived.
The only place that even resembled home a little was the stream. It was a long walk, but in some ways, it reminded her of the Samegawa Riverbank.
It was a long walk, but she found herself there again after class. Standing and staring at the water, she never really felt anything, but she had to admit that she liked the sound of it. She had vague memories (okay, clear memories...but sometimes, it was easier to pretend they weren’t so vivid) of time spent there with her mother and father. Her father had now passed, of course, but he wasn’t here. And her mother...her mother was all alone.
Yumi wondered about how often her mother might walk by the floodplains back home, and she found herself hoping that she would think of her, too, even if she couldn’t bear the the thought of her mother being all alone now.
With an irritated sigh, Yumi addressed the river with finality. “This is stupid. I really need to get a hobby, huh.” She could just imagine what Souji or Yosuke would say if they caught her all the way out here, moping by herself. She’d been here for nearly a week, and this really wasn’t going to cut it. It was taking the first step towards improving her life here that was the hard part...
...but it was a good thing that someone had already showed her how to walk. “Alright.” She looked around briefly, making sure no one was nearby. “Starting tomorrow, there’s no more moping around. So...don’t worry about me, mom, alright? I’ll be fine. I promise.”
